Future of LED Grow  Lights

What other cool stuff should I know?

The Emerson effect

Emerson discovered that adding infrared to a deep red light caused greater photosynthesis than either deep-red (670nm) or far-red (700nm+) by themselves. This has in hindsight been understood as a fairly obvious consequence of the molecular dance between the Photosystem I and Photosystem II photoreceptor structures, explained earlier. It's why you should use red with warm white. The Warm white provides the 700nm. It's a myth that 730nm is useful for this effect. 730nm is useful for 'putting plants to sleep', but not for the Emerson effect.

UV causes plants to produce oils, antioxidant vitamins and flavonoids to protect themselves from the damaging effects of UV. These compounds produce the vibrant colors, smells and tastes of plants.

How far away should I setup my LED grow light from the plant canopy?

Recommended distances may vary based on the brand, light shape, coverage area, beam angle, etc. These factors all affect the Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR) that contacts the plants leaves. The best advice is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for their light as they will all be slightly different. But generally, 18"-36" is a typical distance: 18" for flower and 24" or more for veg.
